The 113th Congress began it’s session Thursday and it took almost no time for the spending spree to get underway. The task at hand was simple; pass legislation that will provide financial assistance to the victims of Superstorm Sandy. The result wasn’t overly surprising but disappointing nonetheless. While billions of dollars have been allocated in the latest pieceof legislation, much of the funding is earmarked for projects completely unrelated to teh devastation and aftermath of the storm.
In the Sandy relief bill you’ll find $150 million given to Fisherman in Alaska. For those that may have already forgotten, superstorm Sandy impacted much of the U.S. east coast from the Carolinas, through New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, but Alaska was nearly 4,000 miles away from the storm’s path and on the other side of the continent. There’s a lot more pork where that came from. How about $2 million in taxpayer funds to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., $336 million to Amtrak or even $8 million to Homeland Security and the Justice Departments for the purchase of new vehicles. Other earmarks include money set aside for reforestation of private land, investment in neighborhood construction projects outside of the affected region and even money for the Kennedy Space Center.
It is entirely possible that some of these other projects are necessary or justifiable, but if they are such important projects then why not let them stand on their own in seperate legislation? Obivously $150 million toward Fisheries in Alaska would never pass the scrutiny of the American people on it’s own, but if it’s secretly added to a bill intended for the victims of a natural disaster then how can anyone possibly say “no”.
Insurance Companies to the Rescue?
Luckily those who bought homeowners insurance on Staten Island should have some relief by now, after all it has been over two months since the storm. You would assume the previous statement to be true, but of course such is not the case. Allstate has low-balled several policy holders in the path of the storm and even dared to use images of their destroyed homes in various TV commercials without even giving it a thought. We have the story of one family that has been offered $10,000 and whose home was used in a commercial. Ironically this commercial details how Allstate cares about it’s policy holders… you make the call.
Also on This Episode…
– A $1.29 Honey Bun is the center of a police chase, arrest and $1,001.29 bond… Oh and of course the story comes from Florida.
– Ann Coulter says we should list the names of people that get abortions. While I may give the benefit of the doubt to most people, it’s hard to do so with a woman who bashed families of 9/11 victims for daring to collect a check from the federal government. Coulter appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program and was discussing how ridiculous it was for a newspaper to publish the names of every gun owner in a particular town, so her idea was to really stick it to Liberals by posting the names of everyone that lives in Section 8 housing or those that have had abortions. While perhaps being a bit sarcastic, Coulter is unwilling to give up her title as queen of bad analogies.
– Connecticut town has video game burning as games apparently are breaking into schools and shooting our children left and right. Why the next thing you know, violent cartoons may cause global warming!
– The worst song of the year 2012 is revealed and while there are many worthy candidates, one stands out above… or below… the others as craptacularly the worst!

Again you are right about our government. How they do “business” floors me.
It’s a shame all that money isn’t going where it’s really needed.
Allstate is one insurance company I’m glad I’ve never had to deal with. That’s just so sad what they did to that couple.
Honey Bun thief was mostly likely hungry with no money and or possibly mentally lost or on drugs.
Ann Coulter is a bloody twit. That’s all I have to say about her, gonna hold my tongue and not say more.
I happen to be a single mom. I raised my son on my own. I played video games with him all the time while he grew up. I bought him games that were for his age. When he was old enough and to know the difference, damn skippy we got Mortal Kombat among a few others to play. It’s how you raise your children. You just don’t throw them in front of games, movies or TV and not teach them morals, values or manners.
For once I totally agree with you on the worse song of the year. :)
And Kiss and ZZ Top what the hell was those songs? Blah.
However I do like some of those you don’t like, but that’s what makes me, well me. <3
