Landfill Fires Next to Nuclear Waste… Finally a City That Makes Detroit Seem Habitable

image post

Over the years we’ve had our share of fun at the expense of the motor city.  Some criticisms may be accurate and deserved, others perhaps exaggerated a bit but even the D can’t possibly compete with Bridgeton, Missouri.

The St. Louis suburb faces a pending crisis as an underground smouldering landfill sits just a quarter of a mile away from a deposit of nuclear waste.  The severity of the issue and the degree to which the citizens of Bridgeton are at risk is still hotly debated among the various government agencies and researchers.  Nonetheless, residents are still contemplating whether or not to purchase gas masks or move away from the area altogether.

One of the major contentious issue seems to revolve around whether the fire within the landfill is moving toward the nuclear waste.  The Environmental Protection Agency seems to suggest it is not and that the risk is minimal, but others aren’t so certain.

Tip of the Day: If the city in which you live is experiencing a smouldering landfill and there’s nuclear waste nearby… it’s probably a good idea to move and to do so quickly and not return for a few hundred thousand years because, you know, nuclear waste.

If a Candidate With Zero Percent Drops Out… Does Anyone Notice?

A fairly salient question following a press conference today in which Jim Webb, Democratic Presidential hopeful, officially suspended his campaign.  The former congressman was finding it difficult to gain any traction among his Democrat party counterparts following last week’s debate.  With the latest polling data indicating Webb had a solid zero to two percent of the vote it only seemed to be a matter of time before he would walk away.

Webb was heavily criticized by various pundits and throughout social media last week following the debate when he insisted that he was not given equal time/representation.  Webb went on to call the process “rigged” and noted that politics seems more interested in catering to, and moving toward, extremes on either side.  Strangely, Webb is actually correct here as very few candidates on either side are anywhere close to “moderate” with the potential exception being equally doomed candidate Lincoln Chafee.

The plot twist here is that Webb appears to be considering a continuation of his campaign as an Independent.  Webb had raised around $675,000 and, as of last week, still had around $300,000 in the bank—a far cry from the millions in the war chests of rival candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
