Seattle Smokes Denver in Super Bowl

image post

Seattle 43, Denver 8.

The largest television viewing audience in history witnessed yet another super let down on the NFL’s biggest stage.  While Seattle Seahawks fans rejoiced as their team unceremoniously demolished Payton Manning and the Denver Broncos on Sunday, the attention of the casual fan likely turned to the commercials or perhaps the halftime festivities rather quickly.  Unfortunately, the 3 million dollar per spot advertisements nor the decent performance of Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers could have possibly kept the interest of anyone outside of the Pacific northwest.

Even before the final seconds had ticked away in the final game of the NFL’s 2013-14 season, the blogosphere and talking heads were preparing their inevitable critiques of Payton Manning.  Indeed, the Denver QB didn’t shine on the grandest of stages once again leading many to question whether or not he’s just “not a big game quarterback”.  With the loss, Manning brought his post season record to 11 wins and 12 losses (the most losses by a quarterback in playoff history).  It seems many of these same talking heads and sports writers forgot one fairly obvious element… the Seahawks were perhaps the greatest defense in NFL history!

So much is written of the losing Broncos poor performance that it seems to undermine the phenomenal efforts of the Seahawks—a team that was a two point underdog according to the oddsmakers in Las Vegas.   Seattle had the number one ranked defense in nearly every statistical category during the regular season; allowing the fewest yards, lowest number of “explosive plays” (greater than 20 yards), fewest points per game and sensational passing and rushing defensive statistics that rival only the 1985 Chicago Bears and 2000-01 Baltimore Ravens.  As the old adage states, “defense wins championships”, so then why all of the criticism toward Manning and the Broncos?  They (the Broncos) lost to a superior opponent on Sunday—there was little doubt of this from the first play of the game (a Denver safety giving the Seahawks an early 2-0 lead) all the way until the final second ticked off the clock.

The better team wins, give them credit.

So How About Those Commercials…

When you’re spending three-and-a-half million dollars per advertisement one would expect something more than the typical slap-stick humor, unimpressive car commercials and underwhelming movie trailers.   Even in the sea of mediocrity a controversy took shape; apparently it’s now a capital offense to have a multilingual version of ‘America the Beautiful’.

Coca-Cola took quite a bit of heat for their 60-second spot depicting multicultural individuals singing ‘America the Beautiful’ in various languages.  For a brief moment in time I forgot about the ignorance of the average American but was quickly reminded when I saw comments on social media outlets that read like this, “this is America, sing the damn song in American or get out!”  …right.  Others believed that Coca-Cola was attempting to make a political or sociological statement with the commercial.  If there was a message to be said (which Coca-Cola simply stated that there wasn’t any type of hidden agenda) it would be that anyone of any culture can sing America the Beautiful and enjoy Coca-Cola.  Yeah, what an awful message to send… I cannot imagine why a corporation would want to try and branch out to non English speakers especially here in ‘merica.

Perhaps we need to simply drag these people that gave Coca-Cola such flak over this issue out from under their collective rocks and expose them to the fact that there are other cultures outside of Caucasian/middle America.   This isn’t a street sign or an official government document written in a different language, it’s not even a multilingual message on your bank’s customer service line, it’s simply a commercial from a company that wanted to make an advertisement that reached a broad audience, good marketing to you Coca-Cola and just a little more shame toward those that hated it for that reason.
