There’s Always Next Year?

image post

Both world wars, 18 presidential administrations and inventions that include the air conditioner, radio and television—all of these have occurred in the 107 years since the Chicago Cubs last won the World Series.  Unfortunately for fans of the ‘lovable losers’ the calendar will have to flip another year before the team gets a chance at a world championship.

The New York Mets are headed to the fall classic following their 8-3 victory over the Cubs in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) on Wednesday night.  Timely hitting and dominant pitching by the Mets combined with the shaky defensive efforts by Chicago were the essential ingredients in New York’s 4-0 series sweep.  The word “dominant” may be an understatement.  While a sweep is a somewhat unusual occurrence in a seven game series, leave it to the Cubs to find a way to make it historic; Chicago never had a lead at any point in the four game series, an event that has only occurred three other times in history.

Serious question: If you went to a restaurant and found the service to be terrible, the food almost always inedible and the ambiance unsatisfying, would you go back again?  Okay, maybe you’d give it a second chance… maybe… but would you go there 107 times?  That’s what Chicago Cubs fans continue to do, they patronize the old, crappy eatery over and over while simultaneously expecting them to improve the cuisine… how’s that working out?

  • They always say ‘never discuss religion and politics in social situations’ and maybe that’s actually good advice as I contemplate curbing my political discussions with individuals.
  • My bid to become the director of the Las Vegas tourism board takes a turn for the worse.
  • UPS announces a tiny price hike for ‘over-sized’ packages.  Just in time for the holidays!  …and by “tiny” we’re saying that they didn’t quite double the cost.

  1. Heh, odd hearing my name on the show again. Though my voice certainly has changed since the last time I was on.

Well, I can’t say much more than I already have. No doubt the things you said do contribute to climate change. Only that our emissions also likely have more an impact than you might think. I suppose we’ll agree to disagree.

    Still a fan Mike.
