Think You Had a Bad Day?

Maybe you lost a few bucks at the casino or threw away $10 on MegaMillions tickets, but that doesn’t quite stack up to the level of Mark Zuckerberg’s Thursday.  The Facebook pioneer saw his company’s stock price drop by more than 20% in a matter of hours—this translates to roughly $120 billion.   Adding insult to injury, Zuckerberg’s personal net worth dropped an incredible $15 billion.  That’s right, FIFTEEN BILLION dollars in one day.

The stock value decline of $120 billion represents the largest single-day loss for a stock in the history of the exchange.  Despite the sharp loss to both his company and personal wealth, I’m certain Mr. Zuckerberg won’t be stuck eating a three-month old can of soup for dinner.

Why the Decline?

Given the reported volume of fake (mostly Russian) accounts, Facebook’s commitment to “higher community standards” banning more users and the news that the company sold information about it’s user base to other companies it is no surprise that the stock was going to take a big hit.  Of course, other social media outlets—such as Twitter—have been hemorrhaging value as well over the last few months.  Twitter’s stock price took a 12 percent dump Thursday.

Users are, at the very least, temporarily abandoning social media over outrage that their personal information was sold to companies.   These are the same users that willingly share personal information all over Facebook, including where, when and what they eat, to whom they are dating or having sexual relationships with, what kind of clothes they wear, etc… but God forbid that Facebook sell that information, right?  Indeed, why would they have needed to sell it when it was clearly available for free.
