Since the Previous 4 Years Went So Well…

The number one issue among voters for this election cycle was the economy.  So then explain how it is that Barack Obama, the president that presided over the largest debt increase in a single term, was re-elected.

Despite history being against President Obama in many ways and poll numbers that demonstrated momentum in favor of Governor Mitt Romney, the final totals showed Barack Obama winning with 303 Electoral Votes (and Florida still undetermined).  Never has an incumbent president with such high unemployment numbers and foreign policy issues been re-elected to a second term… until now.  Perhaps this is a sign that America decided to go with the devil they knew as opposed to the unknown.  Mitt Romney’s electability was always in question given his easily assailable and widely variable positions.  The bottom line is that while America wasn’t overwhelmingly pleased with President Obama, they also knew Mitt Romney was a poor choice.

This election demonstrated an issue that has become very clear, the nation is experiencing a paradigm shift toward more socially liberal ideologies.  Colorado and Washington have passed measures that legalize marijuana.  Two states approved of gay marriage, while Minnesota rejected a constitutional amendment that would ban such unions.  Other states continued their medical marijuana programs, while states like Florida continued programs that allow for public funding of abortions.

On a disappointing front, Libertarian candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson received just over one percent of the vote (approximately 1.2 million votes nationwide).  “Disappointing” for many reasons but most notably because this places Libertarians well short of the five percent needed to qualify for federal campaign funding.  Libertarians both locally and nationally did a very job getting their message to the people.  Few radio/TV ads, not much of a social media presence and limited correspondence with constituents to help get their message out there truly hindered the party.

– Chris Matthews of MSNBC makes more disgraceful comments.  “I’m so glad we had that storm” … stay classy.

– Hey, I just raped you, and this is crazy, so here’s my number, call me maybe.   No really, a Washington D.C. man rapes two women and leaves his name and number with one of the victims.

– Racism alive and well in the U.S. .. at least in the south:  Hundreds of students at Ole Miss chant violent racial epithets following the announcement that President Barack Obama was re-elected to a second term.

Nice episode Mike, though I’m beyond weary of politics talk, I can easily take a moment to listen to your post election podcast any day of the week.

I actually made a whole tumblr post about the election results: http://otakujackal.tumblr.com/post/35226295221/yeah-excuse-the-random-picture-i-didnt-really

You can find pretty much my whole episode commentary there. Chris Matthews made another disgusting statement actually, though at least death wasn’t involved in it.

  2. Good to hear you ripping on the libertarians terrible election campaign also! Another good podcast.
